Erik Spiekermann - Putting Back the Face into Typography from Gestalten on Vimeo.
Legendary typographer and graphic designer Erik Spiekermann is undoubtedly one of the best type designers of our time. In this interview with Gestalten, Spiekermann discusses the importance of rhythm in type forms and draws connections between music and type.
Characterizing the negative space between type forms as the rhythm between the notes within a music piece, Spiekermann remarks that the rhythm or “silence in between” the black letter forms, is what puts the face within the typeface.
"Just as in music. That makes it exciting. If it was just the notes without any timing, every tune would sound the same. my role is to put rhythm into it."
